AQL - Acceptable Quality Limit - sampling is the statistical method that lets an importer accept or reject a production lot by inspecting a random sample instead of every unit. For gas torches, pressurized tools built around flammable gas, it is the standard way buyers add an independent quality gate on top of the factory's own tests. Importers of flame products run into AQL sooner or later - usually the day a forwarder or inspection agency asks, "Which acceptance levels should we inspect against?" This article gives you the vocabulary and the structure to answer that question deliberately, in writing, before production starts.

The short answer

The framework has four parts: a lot, a random sample from that lot, defect classes (critical, major, minor), and acceptance or rejection rules tied to those classes. The sample size and the acceptance numbers come from recognized statistical sampling tables applied by your inspection agency. The strictness itself - which AQL level applies to which defect class - is a commercial term: agree it with your inspection agency and write it into the order documents. Where inspection happens

AQL is a sampling method, but it attaches to moments in the production calendar. Each stage catches a different class of problem, at a different cost of correction.

Stages are complementary, not alternatives: a lot can pass pre-shipment sampling and still ship mislabeled or short-loaded if no loading check runs.

Defect classes for a flammable-gas tool

Not all defects weigh the same. A sampling plan treats a gas leak very differently from a scratch on the shell - which is why the classes are defined before inspection, not argued after it.

How a sample is drawn

The mechanics run in five steps. One: define the lot - typically one production run of one model. Two: the inspection level and the lot size select a sample size code in the sampling tables your agency applies; the code gives the number of units to draw. Three: the sample is drawn at random from packed cartons across the lot, not from one corner of the warehouse. Four: every sampled unit is inspected and each finding is filed under a defect class. Five: the defect counts are compared with the acceptance and rejection numbers from the same tables, and the lot is accepted, rejected, or re-worked and re-inspected. None of these steps requires trusting anyone's memory - it is arithmetic on a defined lot.

Writing AQL into your order documents

Four lines prevent most disputes. Name the method: reference the statistical sampling procedure as your inspection agency applies it. Fix the levels: state the agreed AQL for each defect class - critical, major, minor - in the order documents. Fix the stages: say which inspections run (for example during production and pre-shipment) and who triggers them. Fix the remedy: what happens on failure - full sorting or re-work, a re-inspection, and who pays for the second inspection. Inspectors work from documents, not goodwill; the clearer the four lines, the faster the lot clears.
