Both tools solve the same real problem: getting a charcoal pile lit evenly without dousing it in petroleum starter. An electric igniter does it with a resistive heating element that glows hot against the coals; a butane torch does it with a directed flame swept across the pile. The torch's argument is versatility plus location independence. The meaningful difference is not speed but what else the tool does once the coals are lit.
