Butane and isobutane look interchangeable on a store shelf - same molecular formula, same style of canister, same blue flame. Yet the choice between them quietly decides whether your stove boils water on an autumn morning at altitude and whether your torch holds its flame length as the day cools. This article compares the two fuels on the dimensions that matter in the field, and ends with a simple rule for which to buy for which trip. Start with what the two fuels actually are, because the names mislead. Butane and isobutane are isomers: both carry four carbon atoms and ten hydrogens (C4H10), but n-butane arranges them in a straight chain while isobutane branches. Same recipe, different structure - and in fuel terms, different behavior under pressure and in the cold. Everything else in this comparison follows from that single difference.
A canister feeds a tool by vaporizing its fuel; whatever vaporizes fastest at the current temperature wins. Straight n-butane vaporizes readily at moderate temperatures, which is why it dominates standard canisters and why torch knobs give such fine flame control in normal weather. As the canister chills toward freezing, its vaporization slows and the flame visibly shrinks. The branched structure of isobutane keeps vaporizing at lower temperatures, which is exactly why fuel makers build cold-weather and high-altitude blends around it - often with a third ingredient, propane, to hold pressure in deep cold. In short: the fuel does not burn differently in any way you would notice; it delivers differently when the thermometer drops.
