Butane and propane are the two fuels buyers most often weigh against each other when sourcing torch tools - and the comparison is usually framed wrongly. The real question is not which fuel is better in the abstract, but which fuel matches the task, the climate and the hardware ecosystem your users already have. This article compares the two on the dimensions that matter in daily work: flame behavior, cold-weather performance, fuel logistics, hardware requirements and cost structure. One ground rule first: we manufacture torch bodies, so fuel canisters are not included with any model - users purchase fuel locally according to local regulations.

Both fuels belong to the same family of liquefied petroleum gases: stored as liquid under pressure inside a canister, burned as vapor at the nozzle. Because they behave differently as temperatures change, and because the hardware around them differs, the choice shapes what a torch can do and where it can do it. Get the comparison right and the tool selection follows almost automatically.
The practical difference is vapor pressure behavior. Butane, the standard fuel for handheld utility and culinary torches, vaporizes readily at moderate temperatures, which supports fine flame control through a simple adjustment knob. As temperatures fall toward freezing, its vaporization slows and the flame shrinks - a behavior covered in detail in our cold-weather article. Propane holds a much stronger vapor pressure at low temperatures, which is why cold-weather canister blends and bulk propane hardware dominate winter and high-output use.
Hardware is not interchangeable between the two. Orifice size, valve design and the canister interface are engineered as a system for one fuel family and pressure range. A torch built for butane canister valves will not safely burn from a propane cylinder without hardware specifically rated for it. Never improvise adapters or swap fuels on a tool that its manual does not list them for.
For hand-held work - culinary finishing, charcoal lighting, weed treatment, paint softening, singeing - butane remains the default because of control and logistics. A standard butane canister is light enough to carry all day, the knob gives graduated flame adjustment, and the European canister valve interface used across our line is a de facto standard in many markets. ZHENTANZHE torches run on butane or high-altitude canisters with that interface (other canister types need an adapter), reach a working flame temperature of up to ~1300°C, and push an up to ~50 cm flame that varies ±10 cm with altitude, pressure and temperature.
The rated operating range of -30°C to 30°C covers most winter work, with two disciplines: choose high-altitude canister blends in deep cold, and rotate warm spare canisters rather than fighting a starved one.
Propane dominates where continuous high output and low-temperature vaporization matter more than fine control: bulk-fueled burners, heaters and fixed installations. The hardware is heavier - cylinders, hoses, regulators - and the flame is less suited to the precise, close-range work a hand-held torch is built for. Flame ratings refer to ZHENTANZHE butane torches: up to ~1300°C flame temperature, up to ~50 cm flame (±10 cm with altitude, pressure and temperature), operating range -30°C to 30°C.

Propane keeps pushing vapor at temperatures where butane's vapor pressure has dropped sharply, which is why cold-weather canister blends add propane or isobutane. ZHENTANZHE torches are rated -30°C to 30°C and run high-altitude canister blends; keep spare canisters warm and rotate them.
Not automatically. Real flame temperature depends far more on burner design and air mixing than on the fuel label alone. ZHENTANZHE butane torches reach a working flame temperature of up to approximately 1300°C, hot enough for charring, singeing and weed treatment.
