Camping Fuel Planning: Estimate Gas for Your Trip

Fuel is the one supply camp cooks both overpack and run out of, usually in the same trip. The fix is a worksheet, not a hunch: convert the menu into minutes of high and low flame, compare those minutes against rated burn times, and buy the result plus one spare. The worksheet: menu to canisters in five steps

  1. List every flame task per day: boils, simmered meals, drinks, torch tasks. Keep high-flame work (boils) separate from low-flame work (simmering, sauces).
  2. Convert tasks to minutes: with the 8020, budget a boil at roughly four minutes of high flame; estimate simmer time from the recipe or past trips.
  3. Sum the minutes per flame class: high-flame minutes per day, low-flame minutes per day.
