What "flame temperature" actually describes
A burning flame is not one temperature. The reaction zone where gas and air mix burns hottest; the visible plume further out is already cooling as it mixes with surrounding air. When a factory quotes a flame temperature, it refers to the working flame the torch is designed to deliver — in our case, up to approximately 1300°C — not to the temperature of whatever the flame is touching. The object being heated only ever reaches a fraction of that figure, depending on exposure time, distance and the material's own heat absorption.
This is why two torches with similar temperature ratings can behave differently in the hand: flame length, width, stability and how the heat transfers to the surface all shape the result. The rating is the start of the comparison, not the end of it.
How the rated figure is produced
A rated value only means something if the conditions behind it are fixed. In factory testing, the torch runs at a defined flame setting with a specified fuel type and canister, in still air, within a defined ambient temperature range, and the flame is measured with calibrated instruments positioned consistently relative to the burner head. The result is expressed as "up to ~1300°C": the maximum working flame the design delivers under those conditions.
The same logic produces the companion figures buyers see: flame length up to ~50 cm, and electronic ignition rated 5,000+ ignitions. Every number in a serious spec sheet is a "measured under these conditions" number. Suppliers who cannot say what their conditions were are asking you to compare against nothing in particular.
Why your flame varies day to day
Three variables move the flame in the field, and our rating acknowledges them openly: flame length varies ±10 cm with altitude, gas pressure and ambient temperature.
- Altitude. Thinner air changes combustion; the same torch flames differently at 2,000 m than at the coast.
- Gas pressure. Pressure inside the canister falls as fuel is consumed and as the canister cools, which is why a canister brought in from the cold needs a few minutes at room temperature before output feels normal.
- Ambient temperature. Our torches are rated to operate from -30°C to 30°C — they ignite and run across that range — but running and running identically are different claims, which honest specifications do not make.
Wind adds a fourth variable on top: the flame is wind-resistant, not windproof against every gust, and output near its limit will always be the first thing a storm takes.
Matching temperature to the task
The rated maximum matters most for tasks that want everything the burner can give: charring, singeing, weed treatment and fast charcoal work. Other tasks deliberately use less — paint softening wants moderate heat applied patiently, and kitchen finishing wants a short, controllable cone. Questions to ask before you order
Buyers comparing torch suppliers should treat the temperature figure as the opening of a conversation, not the closing of one:
- Under which conditions was it measured? Fuel, flame setting, ambient conditions and instrument placement should all be stateable.
- How is consistency assured? Ask whether every unit or only samples are tested. Ours are tested unit by unit — 20+ checks including air-tightness, ignition, pressure and backfire — because valve and jet tolerances are what make one torch behave like the next.
- What does the range claim cover? Distinguish "ignites and runs from -30°C to 30°C" from "delivers identical output across the range". Only the first is an engineering statement.

The bottom line
Flame temperature is a legitimate and useful specification — but only when you know the conditions behind it. A supplier who volunteers the conditions, the variance and the test routine is telling you something a bare number cannot: that the figure on the box will match the torch in your customer's hand.
