Negotiating with a factory is not haggling over a single number. It is aligning five things at once - specification, volume, payment, quality and schedule - and getting them into a contract both sides can actually perform. Buyers who treat it as a price fight usually win the fight and lose the product; buyers who arrive with a clear specification and structured terms consistently get better outcomes. Here is how the second group works, step by step.

Gas torches are a compliance-heavy category: safety design, testing and certification sit inside the unit cost, which changes what negotiation can realistically move. Understanding that before the first message is what separates a productive negotiation from a frustrating one - a factory that quotes a credible price for a tested, certified torch is not padding the number; it is describing what the product costs to make properly.
Every strong negotiation starts with a document the factory can price against. It should state the product type and reference model, the materials you expect, the certifications your market requires, the packaging and labeling, the target order quantity, and the destination port. Send the same sheet to every factory you approach. Without it, each quote prices a slightly different product and every later conversation re-litigates what was actually agreed.
When quotes come back, line them up against the specification sheet, not against each other's totals. A quote that is visibly lower than the group usually differs somewhere - thinner materials, fewer per-unit tests, certification excluded, or a longer lead time. Ask each factory to confirm the specification point by point and to list what is included: testing scope, packaging, export documents. This single discipline filters out most of the trouble before any price is discussed.
Minimum order quantities exist because setup, tooling and testing carry fixed costs that a small run must absorb. Instead of asking a factory to simply drop its MOQ, negotiate the structure: a lower threshold on stock models, a first-order quantity with a scaling plan, or a reduced SKU count per order. Many factories, including us, run two tracks - custom OEM production from 500 pcs, and in-stock models from 100 pcs - so a first order can prove the market before committing to a deeper custom run.
Agree three things before sampling starts: what the sample fee is, whether it is credited against the bulk order, and who owns any tooling once paid for. Sample fees that convert into order credit keep the relationship cooperative - it is our own policy, and a common one among serious factories. Tooling ownership matters more than buyers expect: if the molds and design files are yours from the start, you are never locked in.
The common structures are T/T - a deposit before production and the balance before or after shipment - and L/C, where a bank guarantees payment against shipping documents. Each shifts risk differently: the deposit funds production and material purchase; the balance can be tied to a passed inspection. Ask what the factory's standard structure is and negotiate from there rather than demanding terms nobody operationalizes. Two clauses earn their place in every contract: the balance payment trigger (shipment against a passed inspection, for example) and the exact beneficiary name matching the producing company.
Lead time should be anchored to a trigger event - "15-20 days after the deposit is confirmed" is how we state it - and quality should be anchored to named standards: which tests run on every unit, what the acceptance sampling plan is, and what happens if the shipment fails. A remedy clause does not signal distrust; it signals that both sides expect the order to be performed and want a pre-agreed path if it is not. Verification is still yours to do: pre-shipment inspection, either in person or through a third party, closes the loop.
A number far below the field is information, not a bargain. The usual places the difference hides are material substitutions (thinner shells, lower-grade valve components), reduced testing (spot checks instead of per-unit tests), certifications that are copied rather than held in the producer's name, and packaging shortcuts. Ask the quoting factory to state exactly what is included. A factory confident in its process answers in specifics - test names, certificate numbers, inspection procedures - and that answer is worth more than the discount you were chasing.

Less than most buyers hope on a specification-compliant product, because safety testing, certification and materials already consume much of the margin. The stronger levers are volume tiers, packaging choices and payment schedule - and comparing quotes on identical specifications rather than chasing the lowest number, which usually means something was removed.
A realistic target price speeds negotiations up because it tells the factory what specification can fit inside it. Pair the number with your specification sheet so the factory can respond with what is achievable rather than trading vague counteroffers.
