Why skip lighter fluid
Lighter fluid works, but it has known drawbacks that grillers raise season after season. Over-pouring leaves fuel that has not fully burned off before cooking starts, which is where complaints about fluid taste and smell come from. Pouring fluid onto coals that are already hot or lit can produce a flare-up. And a fluid bottle is one more flammable liquid stored in the garage. A torch sidesteps all three: the heat source is the flame itself, applied only where you point it, for exactly as long as needed.
The torch method, step by step
- Start dry and clean. Empty old ash from the grill — ash blocks airflow and slows every lighting method. Use dry charcoal; damp pieces waste flame.
- Stack loosely. Pile the charcoal in a loose pyramid or two-lobed heap, leaving gaps for air. Tight packing starves the fire of oxygen.
- Open the vents fully before the first flame.
- Aim low, keep the flame moving. Direct the flame at the lower pieces of the heap, a few centimeters from the charcoal, sweeping slowly across several spots rather than one.
- Listen for the crackle. Edges gray over as pieces catch; move the flame to untouched areas until the base is glowing.
- Spread and wait. Spread the pile with a long tool once the base catches, then wait for a light ash coat across the coals before cooking.
- Never combine methods. Do not add lighter fluid to coals that are lit or hot — this is a flare-up recipe regardless of how the fire started.
How long it actually takes
First edges typically catch within a few minutes of directed flame, and the pile is ready when a gray ash coat covers the coals a few minutes later. The variables are charcoal type (lump charcoal usually catches faster than dense briquettes), draft and wind, ambient temperature and how loosely the charcoal is stacked. Treat any single-figure claim as marketing; the honest description is "a few minutes of flame, then a short wait for full ignition".

Each method has a loyal following; the comparison reflects the commonly discussed trade-offs, not a single measured test. Many grill owners keep a chimney for full loads and a torch for topping up and quick relights.
Which torch suits charcoal work

Safety rules that are not optional
Light charcoal outdoors only, on a stable non-flammable surface, away from structures, overhangs and dry vegetation. Stand upwind of the heap, keep children and pets clear, and shut the torch valve fully when you set it down. Charcoal that has ashed over is still burning — use long tools to spread it and never leave the grill unattended while lit.
