White label means selling a factory's stock product under your brand; private label means the product is made to your specification and exists only for you. The difference sounds small until it touches certification ownership, product differentiation and what happens when a competitor lists something identical. This article compares the two models for torch brands - design control, certification, MOQ and lead time - and shows which one fits which stage of a brand's life.

Both models are legitimate and both are common in the ignition-tool trade. The mistake is not choosing the "wrong" one - it is choosing one while expecting the other's economics: launching a white-label product and expecting competitors not to find the same source, or commissioning a private-label program while budgeting white-label timelines. Knowing exactly what each model gives and takes is the whole decision.
White label: the factory builds a standard product, you apply your brand to it, and you compete on distribution, price and marketing. Private label: the factory builds to your specification - which can run from logo and packaging up to colors, materials, flame performance and market-specific interfaces - and the resulting product is yours in a way a relabeled stock unit never is. White label optimizes for speed and low entry cost; private label optimizes for differentiation and long-term brand equity.
White label is the fastest route from decision to shelf. The tooling exists, the production process is proven, the certifications are in place, and your work is branding, packaging and channel. For a new distributor testing whether butane torches sell in their market, or a retailer filling a category gap for the season, it is a rational choice - which is why we keep in-stock models available from 100 pcs with 15-20 day production after deposit.
The trade-off is sameness. Whatever you can order, other buyers can order too, and marketplace shoppers increasingly recognize a stock unit by its silhouette. White label also limits how well the product can fit a niche: a stock torch is designed for the average buyer, not for your segment's specific use.
Private label moves the product definition to your side of the table. Working from the factory's engineering platform, you specify what changes: logo and packaging, color scheme, manual languages, and - with a factory that engineers in-house - deeper items such as flame characteristics, materials or the canister-interface region for your market. The factory's role becomes OEM: it produces to your specification, and the product is not resold as someone else's catalog item.
The cost is structure, not just money: sampling before production, thresholds that reflect setup and testing (our OEM track starts at 500 pcs), and a slightly longer path to the first shipment. What you buy with that structure is defensible - a product competitors cannot list from the same catalog page, aimed precisely at the customers you serve.

Whichever model you choose, ask whose name the certificates and test reports carry. In ignition tools this is not paperwork pedantry: destination markets impose real safety expectations - ISO 9994 and ISO 22702 frame lighter and utility-lighter safety, and the US enforces child-resistance requirements for multi-purpose lighters under CPSC regulations. With white label, the certificates cover the stock product as built; with private label, confirm that documentation tracks your specification. Either way, the brand selling the product carries the compliance responsibility in its market, so primary documents from the producing factory are not optional.
