One is a pressurized, air-fed cone that cuts through wind and sears a steak; the other is a lazy teardrop that lights a candle and dies in a breeze. Watch both flames side by side and the difference is visible before you know a single technical term. The soft flame flickers, leans, and ends in yellow tips; the torch flame stands rigid, blue to the core, and hums slightly under pressure. Everything else in this comparison - temperature, wind behavior, precision, task fit - is downstream of how each type prepares its fuel before burning it.
A soft flame is a diffusion flame: fuel leaves the nozzle as raw gas and mixes with the surrounding air only at the moment of combustion. That late mixing limits how fast the burn can go, which is why the flame is broad, gentle and easily disturbed - it lives at the mercy of ambient air. It is the flame of a classic pocket lighter: modest heat, wide tip, perfectly adequate for a wick or a stovetop knob.
A torch flame is a pre-mixed flame: the nozzle pulls air into the fuel stream before ignition, and the burner burns this enriched mix at pressure in a tight cone. Burning a mixture instead of raw gas changes everything - the flame core runs far hotter (on our torches, a working flame temperature of up to approximately 1300°C), stands stiff in wind, and concentrates its heat in a spot small enough to aim.

Choose a torch flame when heat is the product. Any task that needs directed, sustained heat - browning a crème brûlée surface, lighting a charcoal pile, shrinking tubing, treating weeds - needs a flame that arrives with intensity and stays put. That is the torch's whole design brief. Choose a soft flame when delicacy is the product. Lighting a birthday candle on a cake, reaching a stovetop igniter between pots, any job where too much heat ruins the result - a soft flame is genuinely the better instrument. It also runs on tiny internal fuel reserves, which is exactly right for occasional pocket duty and exactly wrong for sustained work.
