Torch Not Lighting: Common Causes and Simple Fixes

  1. The canister is empty or nearly empty. The simplest explanation is the most frequent. A canister that ran a long high-flame session may have less reserve than expected; liquid feels sloshy even when the vapor remaining is thin.
  2. The canister is not fully seated. A half-connected canister seals poorly and feeds weakly - the classic symptom is a flame that lights and dies at once, or no ignition at all.
  3. Air is trapped in the fuel line. After connecting a fresh canister, the first ignition often sputters or fails while air clears. This is normal and clears in seconds at a low setting.
  4. The canister is too cold. Butane vaporizes slowly in the cold. The tool is rated for -30°C to 30°C, but a canister just brought out of a cold vehicle produces weak pressure and a weak flame at first.
  5. The igniter spark is misaligned or fouled. Listen for the click and look for the spark at the nozzle in dim light. Debris or a wet nozzle can ground the spark away from the gas stream.
  6. The knob is closed or the nozzle is blocked. Transport can knock a knob closed, and a nozzle resting on soil or spent can pick up debris. A blocked nozzle shows gas smell without flame - close the valve immediately and clear it when cool.

Fix them in this order

  1. Confirm fuel. Try a known-good canister. This single step resolves the majority of "broken torch" reports.
  2. Re-seat the connection. Disconnect and reconnect firmly until it locks. If you ever smell gas at the joint, stop and re-seat; a soap-water bubble check is standard practice.
  3. Warm the canister. Bring it to room temperature in your hands or indoors - never with a flame, heater or any direct heat source.
  4. Purge the air. Ignite at minimum and let the flame settle a few seconds before adjusting upward.
  5. Check the spark. In dim light, press the igniter and confirm a spark crosses at the nozzle. If the nozzle is wet or dirty, let the tool cool and wipe it clean - do not poke into the port.
  6. Re-test calmly. Point the head safely, set the knob low, and ignite. Most torches light on the first or second press once the checklist is complete.
