When a gas torch will not light, the cause is almost never mysterious: fuel, air, ignition, temperature and connection account for nearly every field case, and each has a check that takes seconds. This article lists the six causes in the order they should be checked, gives the fix for each, and draws the clear line between field adjustment and factory service - a line that exists because the tool is a pressurized fuel system.

Troubleshooting a torch is like troubleshooting any fuel tool: replace guessing with an ordered checklist. Start with the causes that are free to fix (fuel, seating, temperature) and only then look at components (igniter, nozzle). The order below moves from most common to least, and it applies across the whole torch line.
The checklist above deliberately stops at observation and cleaning. Beyond it lies service territory, and the boundary matters because the tool is a pressurized fuel system: never disassemble the valve, never drill into the body, never modify the nozzle, and never attempt to repair a leaking unit. A torch that fails after the full checklist - with a known-good canister, correctly seated, at room temperature - should come out of service and go back through the supplier. This is also why units showing gas smell without ignition are treated as stop-work items on professional sites, not as things to "try again later".
Most no-start situations are preventable by storage and handling habits. Detach the canister for storage and keep the tool dry, dust-free and within its rated -30°C to 30°C range - a nozzle that spent the winter loose in a toolbox collects exactly the debris and moisture that ground an igniter spark. Keep the knob closed during transport so it is not discovered half-open at ignition. Rotate fuel rather than hoarding opened canisters, and connect each canister fully in one firm motion rather than working with a marginal seat. None of this is real maintenance work; it is the two minutes of care that keeps the six causes above from occurring in the first place.

A visible spark with no flame usually means fuel is not reaching the nozzle: the canister is empty or not fully seated, air is trapped in the line after a refill, or the flame knob is closed. Work through fuel supply before touching the igniter.
Two common causes: air in a freshly connected fuel line, or the flame-out protection doing its job - the valve-linked auto shut-off cuts gas supply when the flame goes out. Re-seat the canister, ignite at a low setting and let the flame settle before adjusting upward.
